This National Pet Vaccination Month, let’s talk about the single most impactful thing you can do for your pet’s health. At San Antonio Pets Alive! (SAPA!), we see firsthand the difference a simple vaccine makes—it is truly the line between a preventable tragedy and a long, happy life.
In fact, studies show that vaccinated pets live significantly longer than those who aren’t. While an unvaccinated pet is at constant risk of contracting life-threatening viruses, a vaccinated pet can enjoy a lifespan that is often years longer because their immune system is prepared for the “big three” threats: Distemper, Parvo, and Panleukopenia.
Prevention vs Treatment: The 100% Rule
It is a hard truth of animal rescue: Preventing a disease with a vaccine is 100% cheaper than treating it once it strikes. * A life-saving booster vaccine often costs between $20 and $50.
- Emergency treatment for diseases like Parvo or Distemper can easily cost thousands of dollars in hospitalization, IV fluids, and 24/7 medical care—and even then, survival is never guaranteed.
This month, we encourage you to check your pet’s records. If they haven’t received their boosters in the last year, now is the time to schedule an appointment.
The Big Three: What Every Pet Parent Should Know
1. Canine Distemper
Distemper is a highly contagious and often fatal virus that attacks a dog’s respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems.
- The Facts: It is spread through the air (sneezing/coughing) and can cause permanent neurological damage or death.
- The Solution: The DAPPv booster (Distemper, Adenovirus, Parainfluenza, and Parvovirus) is the gold standard for preventing these diseases. It is a “core” vaccine that every dog needs to stay safe.

2. Canine Parvovirus (Parvo)
Parvo is a devastating gastrointestinal virus that is especially deadly to puppies. It is incredibly resilient and can live in the environment for months.
- The Facts: It causes severe vomiting, bloody diarrhea, and rapid dehydration.
- The SAPA! Impact: Most shelters are unable to treat Parvo due to the high risk and cost. However, SAPA! Specifically rescues and treats puppies with Parvovirus. Thanks to our dedicated medical team and specialized ICU, we are proud to maintain a live success rate of 93–96% for the Parvo puppies in our care!
- The Solution: Like Distemper, Parvo is highly preventable with the DAPPv booster.
3. Feline Panleukopenia (Feline Distemper)
This is the feline version of Parvo. It is a severe, highly contagious viral disease that attacks a cat’s white blood cells and intestinal lining.
- The Facts: Kittens are the most vulnerable, and the virus can be fatal within just 24 hours of symptoms appearing.
- The SAPA! Impact: We don’t just treat dogs—SAPA! also treats Panleukopenia in cats, providing a lifeline for felines that would otherwise have no hope.
- The Solution: The FVRCP (or HCP) booster vaccine is highly effective at preventing this “silent killer.”

Our Impact: 16,000+ Vaccines and Counting
At San Antonio Pets Alive!, we don’t just talk about prevention—we live it. In the last calendar year alone, SAPA! administered over 16,000 vaccinations. This massive effort ensures that the pets in our care, and those in our community, are protected from the moment they join the SAPA! family.
Thinking of adopting? When you adopt a pet from SAPA!, you are starting on the right foot. Every pet we adopt out comes with their initial preventative treatments and core vaccines included at the time of adoption. We make it easy for you to focus on the love, while we handle the initial layers of protection.
