Chihuahuas rank among the top dog breeds in Texas, particularly in San Antonio, where we actively rescue them from shelters facing euthanasia. Our latest rescue, a blonde chihuahua, was discovered as a stray, trembling and malnourished. His shelter intake photo captures his profound fear. Staying true to the festive spirit of Fiesta this month, we chose to dub this adorable fellow Chimichanga, symbolizing his abundance of warmth and affection.
Upon examination, we learned he is heartworm positive, prompting immediate treatment. Additionally, he requires surgery for amputation due to a prior injury that causes excruciating pain while walking. His foster noticed him stopping after a few steps during walks, limping from the injury revealed in X-rays. Despite his challenges, at 13lbs, he's a perfect candidate for successful amputation, promising a future filled with mobility and joy.
Covering Chimichanga's heartworm treatment and amputation surgery entails an estimated cost of $1,500.
