Beating the Heat: 5 Summer Safety Tips from San Antonio Pets Alive!
We work year-round to save the most vulnerable dogs and cats in our city, including those most at risk during the brutal summer heat. You can be part of this mission by fostering, adopting, or donating to support our lifesaving programs.
At San Antonio Pets Alive! We care deeply about keeping all pets—whether they’re in loving homes, foster care, or still waiting for their forever families—safe, healthy, and happy. As Texas temperatures soar, pet owners must take extra steps to protect their dogs from heat-related dangers.
Dogs can’t regulate heat the way humans do. Without proper care, high temperatures can lead to dehydration, burned paws, or even life-threatening heatstroke. Whether you’re a longtime supporter or a new pet parent, these essential tips will help you keep your furry friend cool this summer.
🐶 1. Keep Your Dog Hydrated
Always provide cool, clean water for your dog, both indoors and outdoors. Dehydration can develop quickly in the heat, especially for dogs who love playing outside. At SAPA!, our lifesaving team always makes sure shelter pets and fosters stay hydrated and cool, even on the hottest days.
Pro Tip: Freeze low-sodium broth or pet-safe treats into ice cubes for a fun, cooling snack!
🌞 2. Walk During Cooler Times
Avoid walks during peak heat hours (10 a.m. – 6 p.m.). Hot sidewalks and pavement can burn paw pads and raise your dog’s core body temperature. Try early morning or evening walks instead.
SAPA!’s foster volunteers often take morning walks or provide enrichment indoors on sweltering days—it’s about fun AND safety!
🚗 3. Never Leave Dogs in Parked Cars
Even a short time in a parked vehicle can be fatal. According to the AVMA, a car can reach 120°F within 10 minutes on a 90°F Day, even with the windows cracked. Never leave your pet in a car, even for “just a minute.”
As an animal rescue organization, SAPA! has seen firsthand the tragic outcomes of heat exposure, and we’re here to educate and advocate for prevention.
😰 4. Know the Signs of Heatstroke
Heatstroke can sneak up fast. Keep an eye out for:
- Excessive panting or drooling
- Weakness or collapse
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Glazed eyes or confusion
- Bright red gums
If you see these signs, get your dog to a cool place and contact your veterinarian immediately. Quick action saves lives.
🏖️ 5. Offer Shade and Cooling Options
When outdoors, make sure your dog has access to shade—trees, tarps, umbrellas, or covered patios work great. Kiddie pools, cooling mats, misting fans, and wet towels can also help keep your pup comfortable.
At our SAPA! Locations and foster homes, we provide shade, water, and cooling tools so every dog gets the care they deserve while waiting for adoption.
